GuMaxV template by Paul Gu is the best template for mediawiki that suits my needs. Nice borders and colours, vertical menu and the left column that I keep for ads and link exchange and other purposes suits my website very well. I was using GuMaxV skin or template or theme whatever you call them but mediawiki calls them skin so we’ll go with the “skin”. I was using it on mediawiki 1.16.x version until two weeks before when I had to upgrade mediawiki to version 1.18.1. The template didn’t work with the new mediawiki but I got that fixed. I fixed the code on the old skin to work with the new version of mediawiki. I ran a thorough test on the skin and I came across a problem when the wikieditor extension was not working with gumaxv skin on mediawiki 1.18.x. With Paul’s help (gumaxv creator) I fixed that issue as well and now the skin works perfectly with mediawiki 1.18.x and the wikieditor extension could also be used.
Since the original gumaxv skin is open source, I have my version of gumaxv that works with mediawiki 1.18.x and It’s called “Gumaxv TechFried 1.0″. You can download the file here but make sure you download the place the UsabilityInitiative.php file in the extension folder as shown here.
Here’s a screenshot of a working gumaxv on mediawiki 1.18.1
P.S. The article was written last year when I had to upgrade mediawiki to 1.18. I’ve upgraded to 1.19.1 and 1.19.2 and the skin works perfectly fine.
